Abuse and Neglect

Abuse and Neglect

Abuse and neglect can mean lots of different things, but it basically means that a child is not safe or not being well looked after in the place where they normally live.

There are different types of abuse and here are some examples:

  • Physical abuse – being punched, kicked, slapped, bitten or shaken.
  • Emotional abuse – constantly being criticised, made fun of, or being exposed to very frightening situations.
  • Neglect – not being properly cared for or looked after.
  • Sexual abuse – having private parts touched inappropriately or being exposed to sexual language or behaviour.
Abuse and Neglect

If you, or someone you know, might be being abused or neglected, it is important that you try and tell someone about this. This is because living with abuse or neglect can be very harmful and it is unlikely to stop by itself. It can feel very scary to talk about abuse and neglect but it is an adult’s job to make sure children are okay and we will try our best to help. If you find it difficult to talk to someone around you, or if you feel you are not being listened to, call ChildLine on 0800 1111.
